In 1489, sugar plants were brought to the island. In only a century,
sugar became one of the most important source of the island.
Nowadays,  there are plantations only in the north of Las Palmas
and in Arucas where the most famous canary rum is made.
Rum is very appreciated on the Canaries and there are many factories
such as the one in Arucas where it is made one of the best rum in the world.
The rum may be mixed with cola or with others drinks to prepare exotic cocktails .

At the middle of the village the Cathedral of Arucas is situated.
This is visited by lots of people everyday and it is very famous among
people from the island  !!

Go to a typical canary street market which is unique in its type.

You will see the atmosphere of the Canary life. From the natural products such as cheese, jamón serrano and chorizo (hard pork sausage) to the own production of vegetables and fruits you will find everything. All products of own make are high quality and very tasty.

Of special attraction are the market-stalls which show and sell the endemic handicraft. Nedleworks, pottery, beautiful paintings and antiquities you will see a big selection with good prices. A good opportunity to go back to your house with an special souvenir.
