In way to Plaza del Espiritu Santo, it is located the best classic complex which includes the Public square and the fountain. Close to it, it is situated the Canarian Museum.
Here, it is important to see the customs and way of life of the Canarian aborigens, so a visit to this museum is worth.

The steps of the prehispanic inhabitants of the Canary Islands have been easier to investigate after recovering part of their works and handicrafts.

In this museum, it is possible to see anthropologic rests such as mummies, skeletons and skulls of the aborigens toguether with ceramic works, pointing out the "pintaderas".
Pintaderas are a typ of stamps made of baked clay with geometric forms which were used as representative symbols of every "cantón" (tribe).

Besides, there is also a selection of flora and fauna and a library which contains more than 40.000 volumes.

THE CHURCH OF SANTO DOMINGO

Close to the Museum, in Plaza de Santo Domingo, it is located the Church of Santo Domingo.
This church is next to the chapel of San Pedro Martir whose construction was due to the colonist Pedro de Vera.
The original buiding is dated in 16th century.
Inside this church, there are pictures of saints of Luján Perez and a mexican baroque showing of the 18th century.

COLUMBUS HOUSE

In a beautiful achitectonic construction, there is a house whose first owner was a man with rank and ancestry.
Between Plaza del Pilarillo Seco and the narrow street to the Chapel of San Antonio Abad, behind the cathedral, it is situated the Columbus museum.
Long time ago, this was the residence of a mayor and of a governor too.columb 01.JPG (16224 Byte)
Besides, the Admiral spent a night here during his passing through the islands.
A colection of documents and objects are guarantee of his visit.
Here are kept the painting of Santa Ana whom Admiral prayed before his travel towards the New World, an ancient gotic fontain and a fifteenth-century porch which were sent toguether with the first sugar canes and banana                                                     plants to America.

Showroom of paintings and scultures, with an interesting colection of the Prado Museum of Madrid make him an artistic and historic "point of interest".

THE CATHEDRAL

...is located in Plaza de Santa Ana, the heart of Vegueta which was the capital of Gran Canaria.
The beginning of its construction was in 1497 and  this was ready for the devine service about 1570.
The inner part draws inspiration from the style of Emanuel I.of Portugal.
The exterior of the cathedral is reminicent of the classicism, however, this couldn't be finished.

The three naves in the higher area are of great architectonic interest.
The flat dome over the Cripta and below the high altar are of an only architectonic perfection, maybe only in the world excluding the Escorial one.

The inner yard fascinates with its Orange yard or "Patio de los Naranjos".

Inside the Cathedral (Catedral de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) and Diocesan museum for church art, there are a big selection of different and only works of arts.

DIOCESAN MUSEUM FOR CHURCH ART

Monsignor Infantes Florido had the idea of the Diocesan museum's construction in 1791, however this wasn't built until 1984. Those who visit the seven rooms which lay out over the two flats, will see an opened window wit views to the religious artistic history of Gran Canaria...

Inside the museum, it is possible to see an arc under rococo style made by the goldsmith Antonio Padilla and a cross by bishop Verdugo (both of them of 18th century) toguether with the Trono del Corpus (the Throne of Corpus) a work of arts made by the Canary goldsmith Jose Eugenio in the 18th century,etc.

There are paintings of the Virgin of  Bethlehem (in flamenco style, 16th centuryl),   works of Canary painters such as Rodriguez de la Oliva, Juan de Miranda or Luis de la Cruz (17th and 18th century), Nestor de la Torre or Jesus Arencibia, a painter from Tamaraceite.

Here it is also possible to see the main works of the Canary painter Nestor (1888-1938) and a small showing of his possesions: simbolic and modern art, Canary handicraft, design and fashion.

CANARY VILLAGE

In Park Doramas which is also the frame for the Nestor Museum, it is situated this work of arts which is inspired in the painter Nestor and it was made by his brother, the architect   Miguel Martin Fernandez de la Torre.
This is a simbolic example of the Canary architecture and flora. A nice and remarkable place.
With its terraces, Restaurants and Game areas, both young people and adults have fun.

Canarian village with its folkloric groups is for the canarian music. 
Sundays from 11.45 to 13.30 pm and Thursdays from 17.30 to 19.00 pm


CASTILLO DE LA LUZ

This casttle is located between the street Juan Rejon and the Puerto Pesquero (fishing port). It acted as bastion for the Canary resistence against the pirate attacks in 16th century. It was built a the end of the harbor. Few years ago, it was declared as Monument of artistic and historic interest.LP-karte.JPG (38179 Byte).
Nowadays and after a short restauration, it is a Maritim Museum.




PARQUE SANTA CATALINA
AND CANTERAS BEACH


The Santa Catalina Park is in the city, close to the harbor.
A characteristic place where tourists and inhabitants are gathered here.
Many terrace cafés give life to the place and give the change of taking a coffee or a beer far from the noise of the shopping area with its many bazars.

This is the meeting point of the intenational tourism and the star point of the "GUAGUAS" (buses).
Besides, this is always a popular place because of the many concerts which are here celebrated.

Many discos, pubs and bars in the night bar street make it the center of the night life.

The gold sand of Las Canteras with its calm water it is only few meters from Santa Catalina Park.
Its nice temperature invite to go for a swim, or go a walk along the promenade.
